for piano, field recording, and video
premiere: Apr. 1, 2017 - CAD Studio One, St. Olaf College
here (1) is the first work in a series of pieces that problematize the oft-assumed autonomy that music inhabits. In this work, I documented the ambient sound present in the Christensen Hall of Music at St. Olaf College through recording and video. This building is full of music during the day when students are practicing and ensembles are rehearsing, but it is a constant source of sound--carrying with it the marks of architecture and design that goes into creating a building. Conceptually, I bring the 'sounds' of the music building and place them in the same temporal space as my very sparse writing for piano to create a dialogue between traditional musical sound, ambient sound, movement/stasis, and silence.
