The Problem of The Surface

for double bass, piano, and fixed media

This work was composed in reference to a story written by the composer. It is in three parts, utilizing delicate, fragile materials in the bass and piano, moving from the most abstract to the definite in the final section. The attempt to derive meaning must occur in the space between the original text, the surface qualities of the musical aesthetic, and the context of this work's performance and production. While the meaning may not be entirely determinate, the action of referring between the musical/textual media and reality itself becomes the way to engage meaningfully. An expanse of sound between physical and digital sounding bodies set the stage for the event which follows--helping something different to rise.
